How Laura started from scratch with the help of the Business Factory
After moving to the North East 4 years ago, Laura has embraced the beauty of what the region has to offer.
To celebrate the treasures of the North East and Northumberland, Laura decided to combine her creativity and her love for the area to start her own business. We spoke to her to find out more about her journey.
What inspired you to go self-employed?
My business is called Cole Beach, and it’s inspired by the beautiful coastline and countryside of the North East. I create sustainable, reusable giftware, homeware, and children’s clothing, drawing from the region’s wildlife, landmarks, and heritage. I’ve always worked in sales and marketing, but after having my first child and taking extended maternity leave, I felt the urge to pursue something more creative and flexible that aligned with my lifestyle and passions. Cole Beach is a celebration of where I live and a chance to build something meaningful from the ground up.
Did you have any barriers or challenges in getting your business off the ground?
Funding and confidence were the biggest hurdles. Starting from scratch meant managing every detail myself, from sourcing stock and designing products to setting up my workspace and handling marketing. I wanted to keep risk to a minimum, so I was very cautious with spending. It’s a lot to juggle, especially with a young child, so time and energy were also big factors.
How did you find out about The Business Factory?
I was introduced to The Business Factory through local networking and recommendations. After looking into their support and attending an initial session, I learned about their new Start-Up Grant Scheme and how it could help me with those early business costs.
The overall process was straightforward, and the team at The Bussiness Factory have been so supportive. They were (and still are) so helpful and approachable. It gave me a real boost—not just financially, but also in terms of motivation and reassurance that I was on the right track.
What has this grant allowed you to achieve in starting up your business?
The grant helped me invest in essential marketing and advertising to scale up my product offering. It meant I could move more quickly from testing and prototyping into actual sales and start building a recognisable product range under the Cole Beach brand. It has helped me move from idea to reality far more confidently.
What does the future hold for Cole Beach?
I’m excited to keep growing—both online and through local markets and stockists. Eventually, I’d love to move into a physical shop and studio space, employ local creatives, and expand my product range. There is also scope to offer more bespoke designs for visitor attractions and heritage sites, which is something I’m already exploring.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone considering going self-employed?
Start small, stay focused, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are brilliant resources and people out there who genuinely want to see you succeed—The Business Factory is a great example of that.
Would you recommend The Business Factory to anyone looking to go into business?
Absolutely. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Business Factory. The support, knowledge, and encouragement have been invaluable. The Start-Up Grant can be a game-changer at such a crucial stage in your journey.
Finally, will we see you at other Business Factory events and sessions in the future?
Yes, definitely!
